A stark criticism not just of the wholesalers who manipulate the fishermen but also of the dead hand of Sicilian society at the time. Appears a little clunky these days and what must have been its shock value at the time has disappeared, leaving its heart to shine.

Un film che sarebbe perfetto, non fosse per il commento retorico....

Beautiful and sad. Amazing considering there were no professional actors in the film, and particularly sad and interesting for me as i'm living right next to Acitrezza right now!

Landmark neorealist film from Visconti, who employs a cast of non-professional actors to depict the lives of downtrodden fishermen in a coastal Sicilian town.

Very evocative movie especially considering that none of the cast are professional actors. Good story. Great insight into a society we normally don't see. A very honest film.
