Thematically one of my favorites from Rohmer though I wouldnt say objectively his best. Characterization and dialogue are definitely where Rohmer excels and here are prime examples of what he is capable of but it lacks a bit in pacing. But I'm splitting hairs here, it still remains one of the finest films I've ever seen.

I get the sense that the film wants the viewer to identify with the protagonist, a young man vacationing somewhere on the Mediterranean coast in France who is tempted by a young woman staying at his friend's house. He actually comes off as a witless creep, much less interesting than he thinks he is, who tries to manipulate and humiliate the woman. But, *spoiler* his great triumph in the end is resisting his temptation and booking a flight to see his girlfriend. The film is awfully pretty to look at but the film doesn't seem to know its "hero" truly is an ugly human being.

Its purpose of using intellectual arguments as seduction becomes clearer (and more fun) as the movie progresses, but it doesn't make some of the early passages any less exasperating.
