Kuroneko (1968)

In the Sengoku period, a woman and her daughter are raped and murdered by soldiers during a time of civil war. Afterwards, a series of samurai returning from the war through that area are found mysteriously dead with their throats torn out. The governor calls in a wild and fierce young hero to quell what is evidently an Onryō ghost.

Dreamy eerie slow poetry in b/w after Japanese folktale. Director Shindo likes Freud.

First-rate stuff: gorgeous b&w images dished up with enormous joie de cinéma, supporting a wonderfully creepy little story. Further cause to be grateful for the Cleveland Cinémathèque.

A samuri revenge film with a diference, a mother and daughter are killed by a clan of samuri but make a deal with the devil or there abouts, brought back to life being catlike in nature, seducing samuri and killing them, that is the deal, but when a young man aproaches and is employed to track down the killer/s of samuri, he finds out they might be connected to his life. Made in late sixties this rewards you greatly if you buy into it, it comes across well, and its very moody in its aproach. its all kept interesting with some action downplayed greatly. a very interesting look at samuri from the horror perspective

A haunting romance, chilling ghost story, and amusing fable, Kuroneko is a beautiful trip into a world between life and death, happiness and sorrow, pain and pleasure.

The black cat is a devilish creature in many cultures, including Japanese culture. Kaneto's "Kuroneko" is a ghastly tale of revenge, shapeshifters, and also a love story as well. Very creepy, and shot in stark black and white, it's a Japanese horror classic. Up there with "Onibaba".
