Kuroneko (1968)

In the Sengoku period, a woman and her daughter are raped and murdered by soldiers during a time of civil war. Afterwards, a series of samurai returning from the war through that area are found mysteriously dead with their throats torn out. The governor calls in a wild and fierce young hero to quell what is evidently an Onryō ghost.

Beautiful set design and camera work, poor story and plot. A pair of women are brutally assaulted and murdered, and their shape shifting ghosts prepare to attack any samurai they can find by luring back to the place of their deaths. The husband and son of the two ghosts is then hired to stop what is going on in the forest, and the plot quickly slows down to a crawl. I lost focus in the narrative and I did not enjoy this ghost story.

The black cat is a devilish creature in many cultures, including Japanese culture. Kaneto's "Kuroneko" is a ghastly tale of revenge, shapeshifters, and also a love story as well. Very creepy, and shot in stark black and white, it's a Japanese horror classic. Up there with "Onibaba".

There's a witchy, atmospheric timelessness to the movie that extends well past the unadorned sets.

A nicely shot moody japanese ghost story, a little aged but still watchable. Unluckily to be entered into 1969 Cannes which was canceled.

A laboured and repetitive ghost/vampire story that spends too long on interminable shots of walking, horse riding and dancing when it could be attempting something dull like a bit of plot, or maybe a sense of excitement. I ended up watching the last 45 minutes on fast forward, just enough to be able to read the subtitles...
