[i]Key Largo[/i] is a film of which enough good can not be said. The camera movement, directed by John Huston, is breathtaking. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall have never been better. The plot is entertaining. And finally, in a manner in which only the greatest directors of this era in American movies were capable, Huston, with the assistance of a great script, weaves a profound moral of man's responsibility for man. All told, this is one of a very rare breed: a timeless and flawless film, to be admired without reservation. So, if you're looking for a film to challenge, entertain, and charm you; just watch Key Largo. It's incredible!

Adapted from the stage play by Maxwell Anderson the screenplay of "Key Largo" (1948), written by Richard Brooks and director John Huston, emphasized the idealism of the early Roosevelt years, and how those ideals began to erode as organized crime spread through urban areas. Edward G. Robinson is mesmerizing as one-time crime czar Johnny Rocco, even though he had long grown tired of the gangster image he helped mold as "Little Caesar." Claire Trevor deservedly won an Oscar for her portrayal of Robinson's alcoholic companion.

Key Largo is a highly tense thriller, with Humphrey Bogart performing well as the disillusioned war veteran held captive by Edward G Robinson's gangster. However, this movie is all about atmosphere and director John Huston expertly creates a sense of being trapped. He achieves this, firstly, through tightly framed close-ups of anxious facial expressions. He then builds on this by anchoring the action in a gloomy and enclosed space, as the situation becomes more desperate. The finishing touch is the groaning and banging sounds caused by the storm raging outside, which complements the visual techniques wonderfully.

Lauren Bacall is such a babe. Robinson is a ridiculous bad guy. Bogart just talks awesome. Lionel Barrymore may well be the best cripple in any movie; ever.
