Key Largo (1948)

A hurricane swells outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Johnny Rocco holes up - and holds at gunpoint hotel owner James Temple, his widowed daughter-in-law Nora, and ex-GI Frank McCloud.

I think this is without a doubt one of the greatest gangster movies of all time. Brilliant from start to finish, terrific acting, classic dialogue and of the few films where Bogart is actually upstaged by another actor (Robinson) who should have been an Oscar winner even though Claire Trevor won for her role. An absolute thrill to watch, one of my personal favorites.

Robinson gives the performance of his career and Bogart is solid as always. Huston keeps the picture tight, tense, and near perfect.

There's so much i like about this film it's hard to put in one paragraph so i'll just mention what i like best. The dialogue is brilliant, spiky and articulated. The supporting cast is on par with the leads - more so even, as in the case of Claire Trevor as Gaye Dawn and Thomas Gomez as Curley Hoff. Meanwhile, Edward G. Robinson's Johnny Rocco is still copied today and any scene that has Lauren Bacall standing in the shadows is one hell of a sight. All in all, another John Huston masterpiece.

Not as classic or remembered as Casablanca but still a very good Bogart-Bacall movie.

So good! Obviously, it's got that legendary Bogie and Bacall chemistry, but besides that this is just an AMAZING ensemble cast. Edward G. Robinson is pitch-perfect. Lionel Barrymore is pitch-perfect. I love it.
