Keoma (1976)

Half-breed Keoma returns to his border hometown after service in the Civil War and finds it under the control of Caldwell, an ex-Confederate raider, and his vicious gang of thugs. To make matters worse, Keoma's three half-brothers have joined forces with Caldwell, and make it painfully clear that his return is an unwelcome one. Determined to break Caldwell and his brothers' grip on the town, Keoma partners with his father's former ranch hand to exact violent revenge.

One of the so-called "Twilight Spaghetti Westerns" filmed at the end of the cycle. These movies were generally filmed in Italy, often on run-down Western sets, and often featured Leonard Cohen-esque ballads on the soundtrack rather than Ennio Morricone. Its a shame that Castellari did not direct any more westerns after this; this is one of his best films and he shows a real affinity for the genre. Franco Nero, with long hair and a beard, plays a very different character than his Django persona in the 1960s (of course, the film was billed a sequel to DJANGO in some countries). Woody Strode and William Berger are the lone Americans in the cast. Like many of Leonne's and Corbucci's films, this western should be viewed as an allegory set in the American frontier and not as a depiction of real history. The Anchor Bay DVD is very good and includes an audio commentary featuring director Castellari. The film is now being offered by Blue Underground, in packaging that looks similar to the Anchor Bay product.

A very cool spaghetti western that feels almost comic book-like in many ways with lots of creative editing and atmospheric shots and cinematography. There's lots of action, lots of slow-mo, and a killer central anti-hero played by the legendary Franco Nero. The wailing musical interludes sometimes work and sometimes get irritating, but it's a classical device that isn't often used in film. The movie is relentless in its depravity and its violence, and the final showdown is hair-raising. See it.

Despite having the grit and general tone that goes hand in hand with most Spaghetti Westerns, Nero's acting, an overall disjointed style of editing, coupled with a lackluster story and quite possibly the worst musical score that I have ever seen accompanying a film (wherein male and female singers constantly repeat the main character's name over and over again while describing, in the most mundane and uncreative manner, exactly what just happened in the film), let alone a Western, mar Keoma and make it an overall forgettable experience.

Kind of simplistic; he doesn't look like he has a drop of Native American blood in him either....but still good fun.

Stylish, moody and kinda hypnotic at times. The music is one of the most unusual spaghetti scores out there.
