The strength of Judas and the Black Messiah is that it moves well beyond rhetoric, or even historic reconstruction for that matter. Letting his talented cast lead the way, King has made a film centered on roiled emotions and relationships that are at once fractured and loving.

Good, but not great. There is no context around some of the action, so the film feels like it is missing elements, and most of the side characters are never developed, never say anything interesting at all. This film had potential to be...much better than it was, so while I enjoyed it, I can't say it was as good as the trailer made it out to be. Great performances make it worth watching and the story of course needs to be told, even if done through the lens of the informant, which, while interseting in itself, is not neccesarily a film about Fred Hampton himself. Overall: definitely worth seeing, but I feel like it lacks context and at times, tension, that should have been there.

Outstanding performances all across the board! Daniel is riveting and believable as the Great Chairmen Fred, Dominique Fishback is the heart of the film, and Lakeith is gut wrenching. Excellent help from the supporting cast as well especially the female BP played by Dominique Thornton I believe.

Judas and the Black Messiah is missing that deeper personal aspect, some sense of the emotional force yoking O’Neal and Hampton together, dragging them toward ruin. The film is resonant regardless. Still, there’s such an opportunity presented here—to see these two sterling actors really working in harmony—that goes frustratingly unseized. As is, Judas and the Black Messiah is richer and more engaging than a standard biopic, but is not quite the Shakespearean tragedy of double allegiances and backstabbing that it could have been.

There’s are undeniably great moments in Judas and the Black Messiah, but one can’t help but think the movie needed to push itself just a little bit further. But perhaps the raw power radiating off the screen via the performances is enough.
