As in all Zhang Yimou films all of your senses are engaged..for example I always remember the sight and sounds the flapping of the colourful hanging dyed fabric...

In the early days of cinema, nitrate-based film was used and the reels used to catch on fire and burn down entire theaters. "Ju Dou" is the sort of fiery, passionate piece of filmmaking that does not need nitrate-based film to incinerate a whole movie-going audience. Enough said. :)

definetely as lovely and tragic as most of yimou's other work. i dont think its as good as raise the red lantern but certainly as affecting. i was left pondering the morality of all the characters involved as i dont think there is a good one in the lot of 'em. i absolutely loved the cinematography but the dvd copy i had was total crap

the DVD skipped so i didn't get far into it.. but it seems good...it's frustrating.
