In 2014, Tsai Ming-Liang was invited to make a film for the MarseilleFID, Marseille International Film Festival. Since he was not familiar with Marseille, he decided to make a film as tourist, capturing the beautiful Mediterranean sunshine in the late summer of that year. He also invited famous French actor, Denis Lavant, to appear alongside Lee Kang-Sheng playing Xuanzang. "Journey to the West" was invited to be the opening short film at the Berlin International Film Festival the same year.

I was very excited to see this because it was made by Stephen Chow. I was kinda disappointed. There's some good stuff, but I just wasn't feeling it. The best is near the end I think.

The opening sequence is so strong and sudden that the rest was dwarfed for good.... The gory ambience and dirty setting remind me so much of Chow's The Mad Monk, which has a surprisingly similar plot and underlined philosophy, but the lack of Chow himself really leaves a big hole on the film. Chow, we miss you, the real you...

I'm so, so disappointed. The first half of this movie was brilliant. The fish demon was awesome. The pig demon was exquisitely grotesque. The scene where the "demon hunters from the west" are introduced was one of the most maddeningly, insanely hilarious parts of any movie I've ever seen. Its implications are even funnier than the scene itself. Then the movie got lame; the three new characters were unfunny and uninteresting. The Monkey King was a flat character and the resolution was too ridiculous and mawkish. In all, the last half was too appeasing to a mainstream audience. But the first is absolutely charming and you should watch it.

nice story line, good screenplay and comedy. must watch if ur really appreciated message oriented film. not recommended for people who watch film for shear entertainment though such aspects are quiet sufficiently added not to bore the viewer.

Crazy, weird humor. It's fun even though the ending is over the top
