Johnny Guitar (1954)

On the outskirts of town, the hard-nosed Vienna owns a saloon frequented by the undesirables of the region, including Dancin' Kid and his gang. Another patron of Vienna's establishment is Johnny Guitar, a former gunslinger and her lover. When a heist is pulled in town that results in a man's death, Emma Small, Vienna's rival, rallies the townsfolk to take revenge on Vienna's saloon – even without proof of her wrongdoing.

Western about two strong women fighting over land and a peaceful guitar playing wanderer. One of the most influential westerns to date, the character of Johnny Guitar could also rate among the best characters in western history. The film also strikes for its idiosyncratic use of strong female characters which was somewhat unusual for the American western genre. The performances are great, and the soundtrack signed Victor Young is memorable.

could also be called 'vicious bitches,' starring joan crawford in full drag queen caricature performance mode, and mercedes mccambridge who is every bit joan's equal. the conceit of the film is to turn western film stereotypes on their head by casting strong women in the power roles, and placing the men in subservient roles, existing only to please or be fought over by the women. it's mesmerizing to watch the conviction with which the women sink their teeth into these parts - if you love the unbridled bitchiness of 'showgirls,' don't miss this film. 'johnny guitar' manages to achieve the same level of camp, but with surehanded direction and a surrealistic visual style that keeps it from falling into b-movie territory.

Controversial Western for its groundbreaking look at gender identities and critique of social conservatism - famously praised by Truffaut and derided by its lead actress Joan Crawford. It all seems fairly surreal to the contemporary eye - expressionist colours, a meticulously arranged supporting cast of townsfolk led by a small and vicious woman running from repressed lusts, an inn in the middle of nowhere and Johnny Guitars supremely anticlimatic (but profoundly presented) signature line 'You wanna know what a man really needs? Just a smoke and a cup of coffee...' Joan Crawford is fierce in the lead role and the shrinking of expected protagonist Mr J. Guitar into her long shadow is a pleasing surprise.
