Johnny Guitar (1954)

On the outskirts of town, the hard-nosed Vienna owns a saloon frequented by the undesirables of the region, including Dancin' Kid and his gang. Another patron of Vienna's establishment is Johnny Guitar, a former gunslinger and her lover. When a heist is pulled in town that results in a man's death, Emma Small, Vienna's rival, rallies the townsfolk to take revenge on Vienna's saloon – even without proof of her wrongdoing.

An amusingly odd proto-feminist western from Nicholas Ray, "Johnny Guitar" is a bit over-the-top at times, but is redeemed by fantastic performances from Crawford, Hayden, McCambridge and the director's always stylish, assured direction. A subvervive treat that tweaks the conventions of the genre, "Johnny Guitar" is well worth seeking out.

Beautiful movie and a unique too, as Scorsese points out. It's awesome no matter how you look at it, and I liked the then bald idea of putting two women in a non-conventional for them environment of leading roles in a western movie. The music is so rich, it's filled with passion and it bursts out from the screen along with the likewise passionate performances by Sterling Hayden, Joan Crawford and others. All this added up to make this one a really great classic picture.

A much better classic Western. Interesting characters and not quite so much black and white as Ford's effort and a couple of twists in there to boot.
