Having watched Gone with the Wind several times, I never understood Scarlett O'Hara's character, nor the sympathy of the other characters toward her. Now I understand. The violence implied by the hickory stick and the brief lecture to Preston Dillard (the Yankee banker) about how to handle Julie Marsden (beat her with a hickory stick, put salve on her wounds and give her a big piece of jewelry) explain a lot about the Southern way of life. The horrid images of the most benign moments of the disinherited African Americans are hard to take, but don't quite explain the social system, but that hickory stick may be the main character of the whole movie.

This is 1852 dumplin', 1852, not the Dark Ages. Girls don't have to simper around in white just because they're not married.

Bette Davis makes this kinda far-fetched Civil War era soap opera seem brilliant! She's incredible in it and completely deserved the Best Actress Oscar she won for it!

"If ever a devil was born without a pair of horns...it would be you, Jezebel it'd be you." -Revend Horton Heat. A must see.

Bette Davis's second Oscar win for playing a Southern belle who chases after men versus having men chase after her, even though it doesn't work out in her favor. Anyone who wants to meet Bette Davis before she became a total bitch should see this film.
