Classic Bette Davis melodrama, in which Bette mesmerises and scandalises New Orleans society by wearing a red dress instead of regulation white, literally becoming scarlet woman and society outcast. A true 'Pride comes before a fall' movie, the decline and fall of the arrogant Julie from belle of the ball is shockingly realised in the closing scene as Bette is transported not in a fine carriage as at the beginning but on a corpse-laden yellow fever cart.

A superb Bette Davis film, she is well cast as the tempestuous Southern belle. She won an Oscar for her acting. Henry Fonda is fine, but as expected, Bette dominates the film. Good supporting cast, the art direction and costumes are magnificent.

wow. could Bette Davis act or what? She nails this role completely, almost making Henry Fonda a non entity in the film. The film shows a south struggling with its future, not too successfully. At the same time, its protagonist struggles with herself and her desires, mirroring the society that is crumbling slowly around her. Watching the film one can't help but be captivated at all times by Davis. She is so good.
