Jesus Christ Superstar Live! diverges from television's holiday tradition of genuflecting before Hollywood history and its long-accepted and outdated vision of what religious figures look like.

John Legend is NOT Ted Neely. Loved the movie as a 12 year old and am partial to how it was presented. John Legend came across to me as arrogant. Where was the joy and love Christ had for his followers. I did not find fault with anything else. I wish I could love this. But Jesus IS the story.

Here's the thing: This was a phenomenally balanced production of Jesus Christ Superstar, in which star power was equaled by depth of feeling and characterization in all the principals.

This Superstar was the closest that live television has come to creating a hybrid new form, combining elements of epic cinema, the stage musical, and the concert film. It's a minor miracle.
