Director Trevor White frames the former teen gang member's life as an uplifting coming-of-age prison drama that feels entirely disconnected from the realities of incarceration.

Burns has overcome a lot of hardship in his life, and his story is truly inspiring, but not everybody's story needs to be a movie.

Christy Lemire 17 Jan 2014

The poems — and the film as a whole — fail to flesh James out as a whole and complicated human being worth rooting for.

Jamesy boy is a real life story. The struggle of a person who is forced to do things he later regrets and ends in jail and struggles again to get out of system he dragged himself in. The film is very enjoyable!

Tackled with a sense of thoughtfulness and compassion that makes the would-be garden-variety narrative worthwhile.
