Unrelentingly bleak, Ironweed is a film without an audience and no reason for being except its own self-importance.

I watched IRONWEED back in 80's 5 times on theater. It's dark,and yes,depressing,Still there are some pure emotion in this film.I loved especially support actors,Tom Waits,Nathan Lane,

I liked the scenes with Meryl and Jack together, they really brought out the best in each other, but the rest got lost for me.

A masterful look at two of our best actors giving the performances of their lifetimes. Streep is particularly stunning, virtually unrecognizable behind bloodshot eyes and a haze of alcoholism. Plot-wise, the film doesn't go off on that many tangents, so that it threatens to become listless. Thankfully though, the performances and a gorgeously bleak look at Depression-era squalor keep you glued to the screen.
