I'm very thankful for Jeff Shannon's synopsis of this film on the Flixter page, because otherwise it would be impossible to describe. In a way it's like a mixture of (a.) the "documentary of a botched film" subgenre of Man of La Mancha, (b.) the "satirical mockumentary" subgenre of This is Spinal Tap, and (c.) the "mockumentary about reality and illusion" subgenre of F for Fake--which is in turn futher inspired by (d.) the "behind the scenes" documentaries of Werner Herzog's filmmaking misadventures (Burden of Dreams, My Best Fiend). Even if one finds Zak Penn's self-parody a bit tiresome here and there, there's still some real fun here in watching Herzog himself play along--both in the film itself as well as on the commentary track. Herzog fans should certainly check it out, because they're most likely to appreciate all of the humor.

Zak Penn is a little hard to belive but Herzog totally makes this film. A funny idea well-executed.

This was a hilarious mockumentary. I could sit and be intrigued and amused by Herzog talking for hours. I was about to say it felt like a real-life Life Aquatic, but it was fake, but I think that's the appropriate response. Also, isn't it just awesome that Herzog worked with Zak Penn?

When I first heard of this movie, I thought it was a weird pairing of Werner Herzog and Zak Penn, but for the purpose of this mockumentary it works very well. I think Zak Penn should stay away from writing crap blockbuster movies like Behind Enemy Lines, and write more of this stuff (though I guess the blockbusters are what sells). He's got a very good ear for dialogue and is not afraid of playing himself off as a conniving, sleazy, liar. Werner Herzog is also great. I think people think he's either just this really serious filmmaker who could never crack a joke or they think he's this dictator director who makes his crew lift a large boat over a mountain. I think his performance works very well in a comic sense. The film is so ridiculous that it competes with Christopher Guest's mockumentaries. Which is the highest compliment you can make. On the dvd, the commentary is just as hilarious. It consists of Zak Penn trying to find someone from the crew or anyone of the street who will do a commentary with and make him look good, to which he is never successful.
