As always, Biers' production is meticulous, but this time around, her story is a little too neatly laid out, her characters connecting preordained moral dots.

A slow moving, multi layered piece focusing on the way to deal with people who live their lives through bullying and intimidation, from the playground to adult life. It is easy for an adult to show his children that showing no fear in a non violent confrontation will suffice, but how well does one really know themselves when they are faced with something more harrowing and extreme? All the main characters forming the 2 families connected through their boys being in the same class at school are all interesting and convey well how past family trauma has an effect on how one conducts themselves on the school playground and how it continues in later life. I'm not sure if the message was that violence is necessary in certain situations in the hands of the righteous, but a solid and emotional film none the less.

One of those movies which touches your inner dilemmas and will leave you with a strong aftertaste.

Asks worthwhile questions about how fathers can best lead their sons, about the expectations placed on men by society and about their struggles with their inner violent impulses, which can lay so dormant and unnoticed, then, in a frightening rush, explode.

Susanne Biers' impressive canon of Danish language films continues with In A Better World, another intense drama littered with moral dilemmas and tough choices for its troubles characters. The issue of bullying, portrayed on many levels, dominates the film, and it makes for uncomfortable, stomach churning drama. Those familiar with Biers' films will recongnise the verite, hand held camera style, the extreme close ups and the naturalistic performances. The film also echoes her previous After The Wedding by bookending the Danish-set story with scenes featuring children in third world locations. This doesn't quite reach the heights of that particular film, but its still powerful and thought provoking stuff.
