ICHI (2008)

Ichi is a blind entertainer that travels the countryside with her traditional Japanese guitar and walking stick. Now that I'm watching the Zatoichi series again I felt that it was proper to watch all the incarnations of the legendary show (not gonna watch Blind Fury again). So I watched this "Ichi", a way gloomer version of the sometimes comedic Zatoichi. I think that they tried to hint that Zaoichi might have been her father but I highly doubt that he had time to father a child. She was left by this bind swordfighter of a father and thus she has a lot of unresolved issues. This is actually not halfbad and when there's no more Zatoichi this is very good substitute.

A modestly enjoyable, if somewhat forgettable and predictable, film. Though billed as something of a different take on or homage to the original Zatoichi films, it would be better described as a mashup of elements from generic chambara, Yojimbo, and both the new and old Zatoichi films in which the writers thought they were making a script for an anime and not a live-action film. All in all, it wasn't bad, just blazingly mediocre, which is a shame.

This film has a strong nostalgic style with it's atmosphere, cinematography, and acting. Fumihiko Sori has taken the Zatoichi classic in another direction, If you like the classic Kung Fu/Saumurai films the you should check this one out. A young and beautiful blind woman is on a journey to find the blind swordsman who trained her, along the way she reluctantly allows a man and a young boy to travel with her. Cynical and bitter from the way she has been mistreated all her life, she seeks out the only person who cared about her and ends up forming a deep bond with her two new acquaintances and finds something worth fighting for when the town is taken over by a sinister band of renegade samurai.

Despite its unique premise, Ichi is a rather average, run-of-the-mill samurai swordplay flic. One doesn't gripe about plain characters or plot in such a film, but I do take issue with its surprising lack of swordplay. You'd think a story in which every major and minor character intends to fight with swords would be chock-full-o' dazzling sword fights, but, alas, the film is a shade too timid in this regard. Still, worth it if you're craving a little action.
