A gem. Too bad Dolly Haas gave up her acting career for her caricaturist husband. She's outstanding. With a tweak to the ending (from thriller to tragedy!) I would have unreservedly slapped on an extra etoile.

Excellent film, Clift gives a great performance as a priest who keeps his vow of silence in order to protect a parisoners confession even when it looks like he may have been set up to be the prime suspect by the murderer.

This is a great Hitchcock movie. Its basis is the inviolable seal of the confessional which makes for great amounts of suspense. It is also a way of seeing the Church the way she was preceding the reforms of the sixties. Clift's performance is very convincing as the conflicted priest.
