The film—skillfully helmed by Brent Hodge and Derik Murray and featuring talking-head testimonials from family members, friends, and costars such as Mike Myers and Bob Odenkirk—heralds "Tommy Boy" as definitive and notes how winning a romantic lead Farley is in "Coneheads".

Watching old SNL skits with Chris Farley after watching this documentary was like watching an artist performing his craft while at the height of his fame and brilliance. Chris Farley was a genius who was taken from us way too soon. My favorite movie that he starred in is a toss up between Tommy Boy and Beverly Hills Ninja. Seeing his peers, his friends and his family reminiscing about him throughout his life and career was heartwarming and brought tears to my eyes. Even seeing some celebrities I respect breaking down showed the love and respect they had not only for Chris as a performer but as a person as well. Learning things about Chris Farley that I had no idea about him showed me the human side of this celebrity. If you loved Chris Farley, then you will absolutely love this documentary and it will bring the feels and nostalgia to your life.

Full disclosure: I never found Chris Farley particularly funny. This documentary traces Farley's life from Madison, Wisconsin to SNL and Hollywood stardom. There are recollections from friends, which mostly read as "you had to be there" kinds of stories. The bulk of the film centers on his time at SNL, however the fact that he did not write his own material, leads most of the anecdotes to be about his behind the scenes antics, not about the process of doing live theater. His career (and life) was so short that there isn't an incredibly large source of material to draw upon, other than his friends and family talking about his need to be loved, and his desire to make everyone laugh- not groundbreaking information. They touch upon his drinking, but only hint at a larger abuse of drugs, so it isn't as though this is a 'warts and all' exploration. His story is sad, as all tragically cut short lives are, however one feels like you are getting only a sterilized version of his story.
