Hour of the Gun (1967)

Marshal Wyatt Earp kills a couple of men of the Clanton-gang in a fight. In revenge Clanton's thugs kill the marshal's brother. Thus, Wyatt Earp starts to chase the killers together with his friend Doc Holliday.

151121: I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Classy, older western with a unique look at what occurred after the gunfight near the OK Corral.

Good, not great. Mainly worth seeing for Jason Robards excellent performance as Doc Holliday and the stylized touches in the cinematography. The famous gunfight is probably depicted more accurately here than in any version I've seen. They had the makings of an excellent movie and felt obliged to tack a trite Hollywood ending on it. Tombstone is better.

The memory of the Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster performances in "Gunfight" haunts the sequel like a ghost, but Hour of the Gun pretty much manages to stand on its own.

Hour of the Gun is an austere study of the events following the famous gun battle at the OK Corral, and somewhat muddled psychological picture of what motivated Wyatt Earp. In the hands of a director like Sam Peckinpah this idea probably would have been better handled, but John Sturges was a workman-like director, and this film starts well but soon seems tiresome. Still there's much to admire here. James Garner is good as Earp, and Jason Robards has fun as Doc Holliday, though he's hardly consumptive and too old for the part. The Panavision widescreen photography is beautiful to look at, but this film's real saving grace is a magnificent, masterful score by Jerry Goldsmith. Fans of film music have remembered it better than the movie it so well supports

Great movie that earns a spot next to Tombstone. Action packed and revenge driven, just what I like. Jason Robards does a really good Doc Holiday.
