An older CIA agent has just been told by his superior that he is being regulated to a desk job. This does not sit well with the agent, who quits and heads to Europe to write a memoir exposing the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Wakter Matthau really is perfect as the disgruntled agent who leads the CIA on a wild goose chase around the world as he slowly mails them each chapter of his memoir. Hopscotch is a great blend of comedy and adventure. The script is witty and just fantastic, perfect for Matthau's brand of humor.

Neame showcases the great Matthau in this quirky little espionage romp. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Probably the most unique spy movie made - not a single character is killed, let alone harmed. Matthau, as always, is wonderful to watch, very entertaining, and backed up by a (mostly) terrific cast comprised of Sam Waterston and Ned Beatty. Unfortunately, Matthau's son (playing CIA agent Leonard Ross) and daughter (a charter pilot) don't quite have their father's talent or charisma, but don't bring down the movie all that much. All in all, a very fun, satisfying chase movie.

Get it, rent it, 'steal' it, just watch it! One of the best Walter Matthau movies ever. Glenda Jackson too. The World lost a lot when it lost Mr Matthau.

Ronald Neame's cheeky spy comedy Hopscotch isn't an awful movie by any means, but it's so thoroughly and relentlessly mediocre
