Hogfather (2007)

It's the night before Hogswatch, usually a time of joy on Discworld, but there are suspicious going-on and the criminal underworld is abuzz. The beloved Hogfather - the jolly bearer of glee and pork-related gifts for children everywhere - has vanished. Suddenly, Discworld's entire mythical system is under threat. The fate of this magical time rests in the hands of a very motley group: A band of wizards headed up by a mystical university president named Mustrum Ridcully (Joss Ackland), a loyal manservant called Albert (David Jason), a level-headed governess called Susan Sto Heilt (Michelle Dockery), and her grandfather, who happens to be - Death (Marnix van den Broeke).

probably one of the most straight from book to screen transitions I have seen in ages, with some scenes playing out word for word. the mini series is a fine introduction to Pratchett's famous disc world series and looses none of its satirical flavor nor delightful wit.

Brilliantly adapted! Although awesome in its own right I don't know if they quite cast the voice of "all caps" quite right for my ear but wow anyway. Pratchett is such an interesting beast. He can be very funny, but also wholly tiresome in his humor which can grate like eating six pints of ice cream in one continuous sitting. Without the narrative voice though, it is fascinating how the satirical elements of the work come to life and the more overt, wonderfully British circular word dancing sort of shows itself out much more subtly without being ground in by the text between the dialog. Anyways...watch this. It's great.

it's funny, witty, mildly moving, and has death dressed up like santa. you can't go wrong. it's a adaptation of a terry pratchett novel. a book late in the discworld series. a series featuring 40+ books. a series which having seen this, i will definitely start reading. i'm surprised i haven't already. the movie is set on an alternate world, similar and yet so very different from our own. the Hogfather is their version of santa, and some evil baddies are out to get him, and all the critters of fairy tales that give us something to believe in. -__- the bastards. so death lends a very long skeletal hand, with his butler albert. and his granddaughter susan, who likes to poke at monsters with a ...poker... yea anyway. i really don't want to spoil this one, cause it's neat. very witty. and i think everyone should see it.

Wonderfully dark and gothic, Comic and merry! a Christmas/Hogswash classic!. Despite changing the adapttaion from a comical light hearted novel into more of a TV drama, The Hogfather is rich and delightfully family friendlyish despite a odd image of death as santa. The acting, costumes and set are also charming. This really is a must for Christmas eve! :D :p
