Can't get past the two main characters names being Chesty and Biff? Cagney does a good job with his typical gangster attitude and the story is cute...maybe not Best Picture Nominee worthy? It is cool to see Gloria Stuart in her glory days.

Honestly, nothing much special here. The plot is predictible and uneventful, Cagney tries to liven things up and does as much as the script allows, other than that, I would skip it.

If nothing else, this film is very significant from a historical perspective in that it was largely filmed aboard the actual USS Arizona. A few scenes (the turret gunpowder incident) were shot on a stage, but most of the scenes were aboard Arizona. I've actually wondered for years why the Arizona Memorial and the museum at Pearl Harbor never picked up this movie and issued it to raise funds for the memorial. just a thought....

It follows the usual Cagney-O'Brien movie formula--Cagney is put into a rigid institution just so he can rebel against it, then pisses off O'Brien by stealing either his girl or his sister (in this case, the latter), and then comes to prove himself worthy of whatever rigid instituation he's rebelling against. And Frank McHugh is Cagney's lunk-headed (but genuinely funny) sidekick. Gloria Stuart is a good enough love interest for Cagney, and the rest of the cast is of course solid. Ignore the fact that Cagney goes around in black face in one scene, and it's an altogether watchable movie.

A fine classic, but a little too predictable. James Cagney is good as always and Frank Mc Hugh scores in a supporting role. It's well done, and the pace is excellent, good characterizations, it's just not very memorable.
