Helvetica (2007)

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

Though highly esoteric in its subject matter, Helvetica manages to map the transformation of style, typography, and design since the birth of Helvetica without being mired in complex jargon and unnecessary information. In fact, Helvetica is all the more bright because of its neat electronic score, beautiful photography direction, and colorful interviews. Definitely a brilliant documentary.

Amazing documentary, whether you are interested in graphics/design or not. The way the film transitions from modernism to post-modernism to post-modern modernism is amazing. Great soundtrack as well.

great documentary on the history of typography and graphic design in general.

I really enjoyed this movie, about Helvetica. Typefaces and design playing a much bigger role then you think.

If you can make a film around something as plain as this typeface, you can make a film about anything. It's all about perspective and insight... naks! Ika nga ng mga AD sa Ad4, "When in doubt, Helvetica."
