Heart of Glass (1976)

To some this film is a work of art. To me, a slow paced film about the death of a Bavarian small village glass maker and how that may negatively affect the township is dull as dishwater. Quite frankly

Watch after reading Marshall Berman's "All that Is Solid Melts into Air," Zygmunt Bauman's "Liquid Modernity," and maybe some things from Slavoj Zizek and Paul Virilio. Damn you, Mephistopheles!

As always with Herzog, there were lots of great moments, memorable images. But it gets dragged down by gimmicks... not just the central gimmick of having all the actors perform under hypnosis (though that's plenty bad enough) but also the imaginary bear, the guy who won't stand up, the apparently retarded girl with the shaved head, and Herzog's damned insistence on once again casting that annoying midget Scheitz. Nonetheless, if you can look past all that, it is a very interesting movie.

Holy shit. I'm marching onward into the HEART of the Herzog oeuvre with a film that I presume is about the Blondie song! No. It's not. But HOLY SHIT. I'm not sure if it helps or hurts to know the story behind how Herzog made this, but SPOILER ALERT Herzog hypnotized all of his actors. I can't think of a better way to convey madness in a tiny Bavarian town outside of a Monty Python skit. This has a lot of what we (you) stereotypical European (German) tropes: fetishes, sexualization of glass, blowing round red things, weird (What you the unwashed masses would call Lynchian) acting and storytelling, not to mention artsy cryptic non-sequiturs. And it's only 90 minutes long! That's perfect! Seriously. This is great.
