Greyhound (2020)

A first-time captain leads a convoy of allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers across the treacherous waters of the "Black Pit" to the front lines of WWII. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy Nazi U-boats in order to give the allies a chance to win the war.

A fine WW2 thriller that doesn't fool around and gets to work immediately. That's probably the most pregnant defining quality of Greyhound as it, led by a wonderful Tom Hanks, keeps you on your toes and provides ample thrills for anyone who likes WW2 stories about convoy duty, marine adventure, and the spirit of the Allies. A very good late-night watch with your chums. TN.

While The Greyhound pays great attention to detail and feels authentic, especially in the claustrophobic and intense scenes in the bowels of the ship, the battle sequences that look like something straight out of a video game dominate the movie and keep us at a safe distance from getting emotionally involved on a level this story deserves.

Greyhound is the bare essentials when it comes to war films. With little character development on paper, the narrative finds victory through Hanks’ patient physical performance and the craftsmanship within the battles.

Greyhound tries really hard to be the 1917 of the Navy, but just falls short. Despite having epic action and compelling set pieces along with nice cinematography, there isn’t much more than that. Tom Hanks is great, but his character isn’t. There’s not really any substance beyond ‘looking cool’, but at the same time, it wasn’t really aiming for that. It was aiming to take the audience on a journey into the middle of the Atlantic during WWII, and as far as that goes, it succeeds with flying colours.
