Grey Gardens (1976)

Edie Bouvier Beale and her mother, Edith, two aging, eccentric relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, are the sole inhabitants of a Long Island estate. The women reveal themselves to be misfits with outsized, engaging personalities. Much of the conversation is centered on their pasts, as mother and daughter now rarely leave home.

Heartbreaking, eerie, and hilarious often at the same time. It's almost like a real life Sunset Boulevard but with two Norma Desmonds for the price of one. The Mayles brothers let the Beales women speak for themselves rather than impose a story on their footage like so many documentarians do. This is what makes Grey Gardens a masterpiece.

The Beales are a total hoot! They are utterly nuts, sure, but I love their decadence in squalor. Their singing, their dancing, their temper tantrums - it's all a riot, not to mention Li'l Edie's utterly original and fabulous sense of style! Some people find this film tragic but I don't. The Beales seem generally happy when all is said and done and just because the way they live is different from the "norm" does not mean it is any less a life. A manic opera that has to be seen to be believed.

The tension between the mother and daughter is extraordinary. There is so much love and resentment. The squalor, isolation, pride and denial make it hard for me to consider them either as fallen aristocrats or white trash.

"It's very difficult to keep a line between the past and the present, you know what I mean?" Living in their dilapidated, crumbling mansion, haunted by stray cats, racoons, and just about every other species of vermin imaginable, Edith Beale and her daughter live with a waining family fortune in utter squalor, yet nothing sways their determination to live life according to their own means. They sing, they argue, Edie marches, they remember the past, and immediately try to forget it. For all their eccentricities and eclectic lifestyle, perhaps the Beales have a lesson for us all: despite the judgments of the rest of society, one must age with unfettered grace. Gaining renewed attention with the Tony award-winning musical of the same name, this is one of my all-time favorite docs. Also see the recently released companion film, "The Beales of Grey Gardens".

This is a brilliant documentary. The lives of the two women, Little Edie and Edith Beale, are hilarious and very sad. Little Edie says the most hilarious things in this film, it's almost like she's an actress and not a real person. I really want to see the Broadway musical version of this!
