A pretty good Samurai drama. Hideo Gosha obviously got most of his storytelling and cinematography ideas from Akira Kurosawa. My only real complaint is the protagonist's wife's bad teeth. It was really unpleasent to look at and led me to wonder why the protagonist didn't dump her for the other girl in the movie.

Gorgeous snowy landscapes abutting the sea. Mostly drama, little action. It's slow in parts, but quite impressive given when it came out.

Un chambara crepusculaire offrant une photographie exemplaire, mettant les 4 elements a l'honneur : la boue, la neige et l'ocean, le vent et le feu. Une celebration de l'individu moral contre le groupe corrompu.

Goyokin is a splendid chanbara classic. The story is compelling (despite feeling familiar), the lead performance by the great Nakadai is brilliant, and the pacing and sense of tension and excitement is great. The action scenes are especially commendable because they feel uniquely realistic. There are great moments that are actual fight scenes instead of the the usual "slaying scenes." It really allows you to appreciate Nakadai's skill and intensity. The score is a bit cheesy and the story hard to follow at times, but overall Goyokin is an easily enjoyable samurai classic.
