Gold Is Where You Find It (1938)

Colonel Ferris, a wealthy farmer in northern California, is strongly opposed to hydraulic mining, a new method developed during the gold rush of the 1870's, which is flooding the area's prosperous farmlands. Despite Ferris' political stance, Jared Whitney, a mining engineer from the East, becomes friends with the colonel's son Lance and falls in love with his daughter Serena. Family tensions deepen when the colonel's brother Ralph gives up farming to go to San Francisco to work for his wife Rosanna's father, Harrison McCooey, a leader in the mining venture. When Lance follows Ralph, the colonel, focusing his anger on Jared, forbids him to see Serena.

Michael Curtiz directs a Western that is almost of epic proportions.

It's jam but good jam-with a few better moments you don't often find in films like this, and Mr. Claude Rains, as the farmers' leader, is chiefly responsible for these.

141114: Some serious deja vu with this one. Almost scary but can't imagine I've seen this '38 movie before and forgotten it. There are some strong similarities with another movie I recently watched titled Guns of the Timberland (1960). Some scenes almost seem to match. Possible? Couldn't find anything on the net regarding these similarities. Once again, here comes Gabby Hayes reminiscing about the Civil War as he's about to enter into another one. With the number of actors used, seemed almost a war movie in the closing act. Decent film with historical reference. Not a hard-core western but close enough to fill the void...though since commencing upon this old movie trek I can't say there's a void anymore. Most of this old stuff is sheer entertainment and class.
