As the wily leader of the Japanese forces, grizzled Kurata Yasuaki has more presence than Zhao, who’s bland in non-action sequences. But Zhao’s ability to deliver dialogue is less crucial than his skill at leading hundreds of extras through elegantly choreographed, sumptuously photographed chaos.

Even if it's a more rewarding watch than other films of its ilk thanks to its galloping yet well-timed story-telling, it doesn't have enough idiosyncrasies to prevent it from blending in with a lot of China's other action flicks.

Watched Mar 29, 2018 Matt Kerr's review published on Letterboxd : This film more than makes up for some slightly-boring melodrama in the middle by having some of the best battle scenes and action sequences I have seen in a long time, particularly towards the last hour or so of the film. There is a lot to praise here, including some pretty memorable performances from many of the lead cast, and I'm a total sucker for battle scenes that put an emphasis on strategy and tactics. If what I have said sounds up your street you should check this one out!
