This may not sound like the merriest way to spend time in a movie theater, but Gett is compelling from its first frame.

Just a comment whilst it is true that for there to be a divorce in Religious Judasism, the Husband must give the "Gett" to the Wife. However, the Wife must agree to receive the "Gett". If either party refuses then there is no divorce. There are certainly cases of chained Women whose husbands will not givexthe Gett but equally there are cases of chained Husbands whose wives refuse to receive the Gett. A marriage Ketuba or contract is similar to other contracts in that it takes both parties to voluntarily enter the contract and both parties to abbograte it. In Judaism, marriage is viewed as a serious commitment, not something to be entered lightly.. it is substantially different to a Vegas wedding which lasts for a weekend. There are various sanctions which have been imposed upon pigheaded spouses who spitefully refuse to grant or receive a Gett. These sanctions usually are successful.

The Elkabetzes don’t need the audience to have any firsthand experience of what Viviane and Elisha are actually like at home. Gett works better if the viewer has to puzzle out the truth from testimony, asides, and outbursts.

The Israeli foreign language feature, 'Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem' manages to enthrall, despite mostly being shot in a courtroom using only a few camera angles. It's a marvelous conclusion to a trilogy, but you don't have to watch the first two to enjoy this. The actors are mostly one-note, except for Ronit Elkabetz (Viviane) who barely talks until the final act. She co-directed and wrote this with her brother and she gets her character who is seeking a divorce from her husband, It doesn't sound like much until you watch it. Final Score: 8.5/10
