Free Fire is a down and dirty piece of action filmmaking with a darkly comic streak that runs through its violent exterior.

Conceptually, it is genre breaking. Somewhere in the middle, I thought maybe this movie as a short film would have been better but the impact of the insanity of the whole affair wouldn't have been that powerful then. The humour was good as there were a few free flowing laughs but you don't watch this movie for that. I quite enjoyed the recklessness. It somehow felt very real and relatable. Good watch!

A violent romp, a mishmash of tropes and personalities, an example of what can be done when a director sits back and focuses more on the aftermath of an inciting incident than worrying about chapters or resolutions.

Of course there would be shootings in the film, if there was not a massive fight, it would not be a good action movie. Boredom does not define this movie. Great entertainment from start to finish.

The budget's bigger now, but Down Terrace, too, was filmed in an enclosed space on Brighton's edge. Wheatley's territory hasn't changed so much. Free Fire is his most simply entertaining riff on it yet.
