Gopher City Kansas hosts a beauty contest. The winner, Elvira Plunkett, and her mother go to Hollywood. The Chamber of Commerce also provides Elvira with an agent, Gopher City's own Elmer J. Butz. Elmer likes Elvira and the shy Elvira likes him, but Mrs. Plunkett, a formidable woman, has little use for hapless Elmer. On the train west, they meet movie star Larry Mitchell, who takes a shine to Elvira and helps her meet MGM directors once they get to Tinsel Town. Elmer, meanwhile, wants to help Elvira with her career and he also wants to be her man. Movie stardom does come to the Gopher City entourage, but to whom is a surprise. And who will win the lovely Elvira's hand?

...the studio wanted him to say funny things rather than do funny things, and they were eager to show off their new sound equipment with numerous song-and-dance routines.

if you want to watch a big, gaudy, self-promoting studio slowly suck the life and livelihood out of the most brilliant of the silent era's comedians than by all means, watch 'free and easy.' fans of putting puppies to sleep would love this one.

One of the most depressing things I have ever seen. The jump down in quality from The Cameraman and even Spite Marriage to this is astounding.

A disappointment in most areas, I actually found myself fast-forwarding through the final half hour searching for the Keaton I know and love, only to find little of it present. Just plain forgettable.
