Fox and His Friends (1975)

Fox, a former circus performer, wins the lottery of DM 500,000 and can now have the life and things that he has always wanted. He enters an abusive relationship with wealthy industrialist Eugen in an attempt to climb the social ladder. His desperation for love and affection soon spirals into tragedy.

This was my first Fassbinder film and it was a masterpeice. Rainer Werner Fassbinder portrays brilliantly the protaganist Fox, who, wins the lottery and becomes well aquainted with some high class buisness men who really just want him for the money he's just won. It is not a gay film, as it was blindly called by some, but more a film about class and manipulation. There are some terrific scenes which poingnantly depict how the rich have the upper hand over the poor, and the smart over the naive or stupid. Fassbinder gives us a realistic portrait of the gay German scene in the 1970s and not to mention some great acting. If your looking for your first Fassbinder, then I recomend this one. Enjoy.

This was an alright melodrama about social climbing and homosexuality that, for me, was a bit too pat. Fox, the proletarian lottery winner, is exploited by his bourgeois lover who uses the money to support the hopeless family business.

The film that turned me on to Fassbinder. Great acting, colorful cinematography, and some memorable gay moments that make Brokeback Mountain look like Stand By Me.

some of Fassbinders greatest work, some great dry humour, could have been scripted now and would still be as relevant as a study of class and relationships
