Fox and His Friends (1975)

Fox, a former circus performer, wins the lottery of DM 500,000 and can now have the life and things that he has always wanted. He enters an abusive relationship with wealthy industrialist Eugen in an attempt to climb the social ladder. His desperation for love and affection soon spirals into tragedy.

One of the most brutal films about the consequences of unrequited love and selflessness. Oh, have I lived it... ...but aside from its stark intensity, one must take into consideration the genuis of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and his thought processes: every choice of camera placement, set design, color scheme, etc.; like his idol Douglas Sirk, he employs melodrama to heighten the emotions of the characters. And it is through this kind of exaggeration that our humanity is simplified, and that we better understand ourselves in relation to the world around us.

It may not be perfect but it's also, in many ways, the greatest gay film ever made and a definite influence on the future new queer cinema. Fassbinder plays a simple Bear who wins the lottery and is subsequently seduced, fleeced and abandoned by an unscrupulous heir of the bourgeoisie. Powerful.

Typically of Fassbinder, the film is simultaneously predictable -- progressing with a sort of unstoppable pessimistic logic -- and surprising. Fassbinder's lead performance is great. He manages to be both naive and cynical.

I hate these types of movies where the main character gets screwed over. Great Ending!
