Tesich wisely skirts dogma to focus on the human stories, which are funny, touching and unpredictable. Penn deserves high marks for drawing remarkable performances from the unseasoned cast.

Probably the heaviest and most compelling coming-of-age in American films I've ever seen. The scope of the film is just amazing as it shows a young man pass through more levels and segments of American society than he ever imagined existed. Show this one to your 18 to 20 year old kids.

A sentimental favorite from my college years. It appealed to me as an outsider prone to dating "all-American" women. I should revisit it after 26 years.
