Flying Leathernecks (1951)

Major Daniel Kirby takes command of a squadron of Marine fliers just before they are about to go into combat. While the men are well meaning, he finds them undisciplined and prone to always finding excuses to do what is easy rather than what is necessary. The root of the problem is the second in command, Capt. Carl 'Griff' Griffin. Griff is the best flier in the group but Kirby finds him a poor commander who is not prepared to make the difficult decision that all commanders have to make - to put men in harm's way knowing that they may be killed.

This movie was very far ahead of it's time as far as war movies go. The cinematography of the older war movie just can't be beat due to the possibilities of splicing in actual documentary footage with the shots, Flying Leathernecks does a marvelous job doing just that. The acting is superb throughout, the script flows beautifully and the plot is right on! A MUST SEE for all war movie buffs!

Tuesday, August 9, 2011 (1951) Flying Leathernecks WAR Another fictional account that can be based on fact when a major makes unsympathetic, sometimes costly decisions regarding his regimen fliers called the "Wildcats" during WWII with John Wayne as Major Kirby and Robert Ryan as the executive officer whose always berading him whenever someone loses his life! This is the real highlight of this film whenever the stars are bickering with one another! 2.5 out of 4

Pretty conventional WWII film for Nicholas Ray. It's solid and not a bad film, but there's also not much to distinguish it from any hundred of other films of it's ilk.
