The script by Brannon Braga and Ronald Moore provides all the background necessary for viewers unfamiliar with the characters' previous movie and TV-series exploits, but not so much as to annoy fans.

This movie is the epitomy of a romance. A true romance isn't just about the love story, but a "romanticized" era of time. Medieval Europe was not like this, but it is what we dream it was like. A great date film as it has all the love story the girls will like and all the sword fighting the guys will appreciate.
