Fire Down Below (1957)

Tony and Felix own a tramp boat, and sail around the Caribbean doing odd jobs and drinking a lot. They agree to ferry the beautiful but passportless Irena to another island. They both fall for her, leading to betrayal and a break-up of their partnership. Tony takes a job on a cargo ship. After a collision he finds himself trapped below deck with time running out (the ship is aflame), and only Felix, whom he hates and has sworn to kill, left to save him.

The film gets right the Caribbean atmosphere (filmed in Trinidad) but nearly drowns over its turgid melodramatics and how perfunctory it's all played out.

The beginning of this move is slow and slightly corny, aside from the usual brilliance of Jack Lemmon who can make any role funny, but once it got going I really got invested in the characters and it was an altogether enjoyable film. Not one of my favorites, but worth seeing again.

Thursday, October 7, 2010 (1957) Fire Down Below DRAMA Not bad soaper which is better than alot that're coming out as of late stars Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon bickering over a lady, Irene played by Rita Hayworth! Requires patience with a superficial ending! Without the revelation near the end, this one would've been a stinker! 3 out of 4
