Fire Birds (1990)

A joint task force operation between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Army has been formed to dismantle one of the largest drug cartels operating in South America. Multiple attempts to assault the cartel's mountainous compound have been thwarted by a Scorpion-attack helicopter piloted by a cartel leader, Eric Stoller (Bert Rhine). After having several aircraft shot down, most notably a pair of UH–60 Black Hawks and their AH–1 Cobra escorts, the army turns to the new AH–64 Apache attack helicopter, which can match its enemies' maneuverability and firepower.

Top Gun with helicopters. That's all you need to know. If that trips your switch, then watch away brother (or sister).

As everyone would agree who has seen this, this movie falls very very short of trying to be Top Gun. It doesn't even get close. Tommy Lee Jones has some good one-liners, but that is about it.

I almost didn't watch this movie because of all the horrible things I heard about it. It was a great movie and really answered some lingering questions I had. Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise both give spine tingling performances. The tension in some of the scenes was palpable. I guess Lynch was just way ahead of his time because it is a masterpiece.

With his final comment on the world of Twin Peaks he and Mark Frost created, David Lynch pulls a fast one and actually bothers to care about it. It is easy to see why the film was hated so vehemently by critics and fans of the series; the quirk and humor that defined TP for many has been replaced by the most profoundly sad and moving story about incest that will likely ever be made. The film achieves stratospheric levels of depraved, sincere beauty.
