The biggest flaw with 'Fighting Tommy Riley,' is that it's lead actor (Davis) just simply couldn't match his supporting actors (Jones) performance. Bad actors in fight films certainly isn't a new thing, but when you throw in serious subject matter, as well, you really should have an actor who is capable of at the very least , being able to hold his own. J.P. Davis is simply awful, and if he had landed the part in a 'Lionheart' remake, maybe we wouldn't have noticed.

Its a really well acted indy. Under the radar stuff. If your channel surfing and see it give it a try.

Elizabeth Weitzman 17 May 2012

The sort of slick-looking indie that plays well at film festivals, this heavy-handed boxing drama is really just a flyweight bulked up on cliches and false sentimentality.

Janet Maslin 26 Mar 2010

Despite its flaws, the film gets across some genuine melancholy, played up by a sobbing Irish fiddle.

Working on a microbudget, director Eddie O'Flaherty coaches solid performances from his small cast and makes the most of the handful of up-close, well-choreographed fight montages.
