The true-life story of boxer-turned-priest. When an injury ends his amateur boxing career, Stuart Long moves to Los Angeles to find money and fame. While scraping by as a supermarket clerk, he meets Carmen, a Sunday school teacher who seems immune to his bad-boy charm. Determined to win her over, the longtime agnostic starts going to church to impress her. However, a motorcycle accident leaves him wondering if he can use his second chance to help others, leading to the surprising realization that he's meant to be a Catholic priest.

Loved this movie! The dialogue is witty and pertinent. This true story is uplifting and the acting is excellent.

I honestly expected Father Stu to be terrible. It kinda is, but it was above my expectations at least. I mostly have a hard time seeing who the target audience is for this - the subject matter screams Catholics and Catholic adjacent religious folk but the R rating/language throughout would turn most of them away and the overall message just seems to be all over the place...

Ross’ script is never able to pull this out of the depths of trite banality, every line and emotional beat clocked from a mile away and cribbed from every other faith-based drama you’ve ever seen.

Anyone who’s sat through enough of those Christian films and watched them with a critical eye (and not for the mere indoctrination) can easily tell that the basic craftsmanship of Father Stu is on a different level. That doesn’t necessarily make this an admirable production, but at least it’s a proficient one.
