I think I've unintentionally discovered a new subgenre of film in these beautiful tragedies coming out of Korea. There's something very similar about them in that they're born out of the problem of life in poverty. I don't speak the language so I can never remember the titles, but I do remember the English titles of a couple that I've seen recently. They are Breathless and The Yellow Sea, the former is especially recommended.

The letter? That's pretty much the breaking point for nonstop tears in the final 40 or so minutes of the movie. I must admit that I can't watch this movie without crying my eyes out. Unlike a lot of forced sentimentality in Korean film, this one's honest. Choi Min-sik and Cecilia Cheung are amazing in their roles, the script is fantastic, and it's just beautiful. For Korean film, I can't recommend Failan enough -- it's one of my favourites.

"Failan" feeatures an original and well-presented mixture of gangster film and romantic melodrama, although the fact that the last element is the one that eventually takes over, deprive it of becoming a masterpiece.

this film has some awesome reviews, and a very high rating on IMDB. Its a tragic tale of a girl who has no living relatives in the world, and agrees to have a 'scam marriage'. It is billed as a tragic love story. Maybe it was my mood, but to be honest, i was not moved at all. Reviewers saying they left the cinema in tears, really need to grow some backbone. nice acting...but no way a top film.
