How amazing is Werner Herzog? Really! I didn't catch that when I should have a couple of years ago, but I was lucky to see this on the silver screen where it belongs- at a screening in TIFF (Thessaloniki International Film Festival) where this year Herzog was invited and a retrospective of his work was presented to the Greek audience. If you expect to watch a film about Antarctica and how amazing this place is, you won't be disappointed. Yet, the focus is much more on the scientific community that lives and thrives down at the South Pole. But "Encounters" is so much more than that. It's a live commentary on our civilization, by crazy, wonderful, rare people of science, with brilliant and exceptional takes on philosophy.The film lifts you up- it lifts your spirit and gives you a perspective. It's also very, very funny. You have to watch this film, by all means!

Werner Herzog is the master of the documentary. Between this and "Grizzly Man" Herzog has taken the nonfiction format and elevated it to its most perfect form, documenting both his subjects and himself in respect to them. "Encounters" is Herzog's lyrical and spiritual ode to science, and it rings truer and affects the intellect and the emotions more than anything else I've seen this year.

herzog's signature hallucinogenic mind maps are perfectly complimented by the razzmatazz of lost souls referred to in the title and the psychedelic and somewhat schizophrenic soundtrack, a blinding combo which leaves the viewer doubting the mundane and affirming the fantastic as the lines between dreams and reality are ill defined. this topsy turvy world advances further on the achievements of "Wild Blue Yonder" as once again we're taken on an adventure to a place that isn't the moon but sometimes it looks like it.
