Electrick Children (2012)

Rachel is a rambunctious girl from a polygamist colony in southern Utah. On Rachel's 15th birthday, she finds a forbidden cassette tape. Having never seen anything like it before, Rachel plays the cassette tape, and finds glorious rock & roll thereupon. Weeks later, Rachel realizes a miracle has occurred - and the cassette tape must have something to do with it. She leaves her family and runs away to the closest city: Las Vegas. There she searches for the singer of the band on the cassette tape.

A surprisingly sweet, simplistic yet somewhat bizarre film. Rory Culkin, Julia Garner and Bill Sage are all fantastic and put on strong performances, anchoring the film and the conceit is a clever one (impregnation by rock N roll music). It's not my favorite film, but if the trailer or concept at all catch your attention or interest you, I'd say its worth a watch.

Very surreal and intensely captivating. While I agree that the narrative is choppy and unexplained, I think this contributes so much to the aesthetic that I can hardly complain about it. It is a new favorite of mine.

The film doesn't treat the ultra-religious like aliens or scolds, nor does it demonize those who prefer sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
