Ekaj (2015)

EKAJ is a love story between two drifters, a naive teenager and a hustler. Ekaj meets Mecca who takes him under his care. Mecca has AIDS and multiple problems of his own. He is high all day but still manages to be the only voice of reason in Ekaj's hopeless world. They cruise the city together looking for money and places to stay. Although Ekaj makes some money as a prostitute, he finds himself discarded, and lacking what it takes to survive in the city. Their mutual loneliness leads to genuine friendship.

A compelling directorial debut from Cati Gonzalez, thanks to her confident direction, strong lead performances, striking cinematography, punchy themes and distinct characters.

This was a very unique look into a world that most are probably unfamiliar with. The tough street life this teenager navigated felt very realistic. These kinds of stories need to be told because art and film are so effective in showcasing humanity in real ways.

This is a very deep movie. It's shot very gritty with a very touchy subject matter that's really happening today. It shows how a gay teen survives the streets of New York without any family support. It's a bit to watch at times but it keeps it very real on the subject matter at hand.

A gritty, yet sensitive view of life on the streets of New York. It's emotionally charged and poignant at the same time. You can see that these artful filmmakers put love into this project. It's an important story to be told and I highly recommend it.
