A original twist on a familiar formula nicely done. Undoubtably the charmer at the Toronto & Sundance film festivals. A small film for a break from the superheros & slam-bangers. A bit of a uniquely American tale here, too. And it t helps if you like the food genre on screen.

This film initially attempts to paint the strong latina female lead as someone completely uneducated in the japanese culture. It appears to struggle with the massive influence that japanese culture has garnered over the past 20 years. At a later point in the film we are met with the same struggle to paint an adult japanese man, living in Los Angeles as having no knowledge of Mexican culture. Both attempts were poorly executed and I am left unable to suspend my disbelief.

100% ratings, is well above what this movie deserves. I felt the dialog was lacking, and the story was behind the times in a few scenes, such as when she signs in as the sushi chef, and there is a discussion whether to let a women in the competition? Really, this is LA, not some distant province of Japan.

Diana Elizabeth Torres is amazing in East Side Sushi. A star in the making. Highly recommend the film.
