Drunken Angel (1948)

In postwar Tokyo, a blunt, alcohol-soaked doctor diagnoses a swaggering young yakuza with tuberculosis, forging an uneasy bond that's tested when the gangster's ruthless former boss returns and drags him back toward the swampy underworld he can't escape.

I wish I had a drunken doctor who threw ashtrays at me.

Wow, I think this is the youngest I've seen of Mifune. I didn't recognize him until about 45 minutes in. A well done, well-paced (er, if not a little slow) story.

Jeez Mifune was a good looking yound man. Solid Kurosawa even this early into his career. I'm so in love with the idea of the discheveled but benevolent and wise man juxtaposed against the slick but selfish and proud dumb kid. This story resurfaces in some sense many years later in Red Beard, but this time with Mifune as the wise old doctor, a nice bookend.

Yet another Kurosawa movie about a flawed but saintly doctor. This one ranks a little bit better than Quiet Duel but still not in the same league as Red Beard. It's a little rough around the edges, and both Mifune and Shimura drift towards hamminess, but it's got some killer camerawork in the moves, angles and edits, and it's never dull for a moment. Excellent use of music, as well. Like many early Kurosawas, it's depressing but with a hopeful note at the end.

The genuine compassion of a drunk doctor and the false courage of a Yakuza patient with dishonest pride and reluctant humility, Drunken Angel is an exceptional satire of the unwarranted social-political system, Japan from Akira Kurosawa. Wise. Noble.
