Drunken Angel is arguably Kurosawas's first classic film and it hints at the later greatness of its director and his stars Takashi Shimura and the iconic Toshiro Mifune.

What most consider to be Kurosawa's first foray into serious filmmaking is a moody and engaging work that is essentially elevated by Shimura and Mifune.

This is one of my favorite Kurosawa's movies. Stunning drama of possibilities of ways of life and their consequences. Can we change our life?

Toshiro Mifune does as well as the young slick gangster as he does as the nameless ronin. And Kurosawa does as well as always.

A young yakuza with a life of booze, women and chainsmoking finds out that he has tuberculosis from a drunken doctor whose greatest sorrow in life is that he can't save every person that looks for his help. The two goes through their own journeys in the movie and what can I say? This is truly a Kurosawa movie, it's emotional, tragic, thoughtfull and amusing at the same time. With very little Kurosawa made wonders with his favorite actors Takashi Shimura and Toshiro Mifune. This movie gave me new great respect for all three of them.
