Another excellent film from Akira Kurosawa. This is the first of many collaborations between Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa. Takashi Shimura was excellent as the Doctor. The build up to the end was great and kept you in complete suspense.

First collaboration of Akira Kurosawa & Toshiro Mifune....Mifune plays a gangster who is affllicted with tuberculosis yet refuses help from his doctor, Takashi Shimura. Mifune's gangster character is paralleled by the Shimura's doctor, who is pretty bad-ass himself. He's not afraid to slap around Mifune or speak his mind. A dirty, grimy gangster movie after post-war Japan....apparently Mifune recently left the army and was already quite thin - he dominates every scene and you really feel for him despite his stubborness. Shimura's character seems like a great person yet has his flaws as well....solid film.

Very strong early Kurosawa grips you from the opening scene and never lets go until its done.

This is a superbly atmospheric film, and Toshiro Mifune is great as the brooding yakuza. But, like many of Kurosawa's films, it can get a little too ham-handed with its theme.

Jeez Mifune was a good looking yound man. Solid Kurosawa even this early into his career. I'm so in love with the idea of the discheveled but benevolent and wise man juxtaposed against the slick but selfish and proud dumb kid. This story resurfaces in some sense many years later in Red Beard, but this time with Mifune as the wise old doctor, a nice bookend.
