CHALK UP ANOTHER GREAT FILM FROM 1939. EXCELLENT DRAMA, LOOSELY BASED ON THE GREAT BOOK HAS EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES FROM CLAUDETTE COLBERT AND HENRY FONDA. EDNA MAY OLIVER IS SUPERB IN A SUPPORTING ROLE. EXCELLENT PRODUCTION VALUES, A FINE FILM IN EVERY RESPECT.

Claudette Colbert and Henry Fonda make a beautiful couple on the screen. John Carradine is very good. A solid and impressive work from Ford. A must see for western lovers as well as early settlers cinema. This is a story of people who built America.

This movie was a huge disappointment. John Ford and Henry Fonda are both great at what they do and have been involved in some of the greatest films ever made, but this is not it. The plot had no focus, there was no emotional connection between the audience and the characters, and several of the scenes were just idiotic (when Mrs. McKlennar is telling the Indians that are burning down her house how to get the bed out of the room). I could go on, but instead I'll just say that this is a steaming pile of crap from one of the best directors in film history.

Claudette Colbert is as cute as can be, but I don't think she showed she had much chemistry with Henry Fonda outside of one scene on their farm. The war scenes are pretty great, as well as the chase scene, but this time period just doesn't excite me in the same way the old west does.
