Drinking Buddies (2013)

kind of loved this...hilarious mumblecore with actual "stars."

I never was a huge fan of joe swanberg, but this one seemed more accessible and less mumblecore, for the most part it succeeds, thanks mainly to the very likable leads, wilde and johnson seem like the coolest most fun people to hang out with, why cant they be my friends? i like drinking beer....but anyways, not a whole lot of plot, but its about their interactions, i do say it becomes a bit muddled with whether or not wilde and johnson should get together or just be friends, i wasnt that thrilled with where it went, but its worth watching just to see them together

The story meanders, purposefully, and doesn't lead to the places a similar studio film would go; Swanberg recognizes that disillusionmnet and disappointment are more frequent and universal occurences than heartbreak.

One of the best films of the year. Drinking Buddies combines an incredible cast (including the amazing chemistry between Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson), low key comedy, and one of the most emotional endings I've seen in a long time. The film takes all the cliches that come with romantic comedies and just throws them out the window, leaving the viewer with heightened emotions such as suspense. You will never guess how the film turns out because that's how life works, it's never formulaic.

The alcohol flows freely...but happily not all the high spirits are of the liquid variety.
