Down Terrace (2010)

After serving jail time for a mysterious crime, Bill and Karl get out of jail and become preoccupied with figuring out who turned them in to the police. On top of that, the "family business" is on the rocks, and the motley crew of criminals who operate out of Down Terrace aren't feeling terribly trusting of one another. It might look like an ordinary house, but at Down Terrace, the walls are closing in..

Very dry, very dark, and VERY FUNNY, un-orthodox gangster/comedy about a dysfunctional family's up's and down's in the world of gang shit. It's like Curb Your Enthusiasm meets the Sopranos. Verdict: Good Stuff

Off-beat black comedy/drama that's a little bit Long Good Friday, but a bit more Steve Coogan stylie (The Trip for example). The first 10 minutes are unbearably bad, but sit tight because it does settle into a wholly original film that is generally well acted. The tone is ambiguous throughout, and while that is part of this film's charm - it is also what stops me from giving a whole hearted recommendation.

A film that is compelling in its own right, while also functioning meta-referentially - as a commentary on the gangster and kitchen sink genres it so mercilessly distorts.

Down Terrace is long on talk but generates its own internal rhythms and pace that makes it feel bracing and vibrantly alive.

Lisa Schwarzbaum 26 Oct 2010

A dark and hilarious thwomping of the whole miserablist British gangster genre.
