Donbass (2018)

In the historic Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, despite the cruel war that has been raging since 2014 between the self-proclaimed People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk and the Ukrainian government, people try to survive in the rotten heart of chaos, where violence disguises itself as peace, propaganda becomes univocal truth and hatred reigns in the name of love.

Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa couches his bleak humour in documentary-like settings to create an environment that is unsettling and increasingly warped by its own logic.

In its own absurdist way, it does shed some light on just what the war did to the lives - and sensibilities - of civilians caught up in the nightmare.

At first glance, Sergei Loznitsa's new film...seems like a scattershot series of vignettes, but eventually, Donbass' near-Buñuelian episodic structure...acquires a cumulative power.

This is the kind of film this festival should embrace, one which attacks the distress of the present with a virtuosic anger and desire to communicate experience.

A brilliant formalist, Loznitsa likes to turn his camera on crowds in motion, turning each sequence into a collective indictment.
